With new albums in tow, neither Robison nor Watson had any problems getting past the usual chit-chat that typically accompanies the press push of a new release. Both artists, who also have no difficulty in ruffling the feathers of others, went into detail on their feelings regarding the landscape of modern country music.

For this podcast, we feature a couple of acts who have been helped along the way by winning talent competitions. Darryl Lee Rush was the inaugural victor of the Shiner Rising Star Contest and Caitlin & Will were victorious on last summer’s Can You Duet from CMT. What I think is most interesting is that, contrary to what we have seen in many cases, to win a Country Music talent competition, you just might actually need to posses real talent. Sit back and enjoy as these two big winners display some of that skill that helped them beat out all who dared challenge them.

This month’s podcast is a great example of what one can expect from future episodes. We have artists that represent a wide variety of styles, backgrounds, experience and even notoriety. While many will instantly recognize Chris Knight and Wade Bowen — thanks to years of relentless touring — my hope is that you will soon have the same sense of familiarity with the two other acts featured in this episode. Bearfoot, a young bluegrass outfit from Alaska, and Eastwood, a harmonizing country band from Dallas, represent my favorite aspect of producing these podcasts, and that is the introduction of talented bands that deserve a bigger audience, similar to the followings of the more well-known names from this episode. Please enjoy and let us know what you think of the music and interviews in the comment section.

This episode features two interviews with artists from very differnt corners of Country Music. I was, however, able to find a common thread among the seemingly opposite performers. Both artists seemed to not concern themselves with the labels that fans and writers often use to describe their sound, and even shared a bit of frustration with me on what it’s like to try to navigate the waters of such classifications that have been put on them and their music.

These artists also share the fact that they aren’t confined to a single, easily defined style or nature. Sarah Borges teeters between the worlds of Rock and Country, while Trent Willmon straddles the geographical and ideological borders of Texas and Nashville. I came away from these visits with a better appreciation for a genre that has such firm roots and allows those roots to grow and form such interesting and exciting branches.
